Beat the Heat 20!

Sportrock began with a simple question:

“Mom, can I build a climbing wall in the garage, please?”

For most parents, a DIY project that takes over the garage indefinitely may sound like a nightmare. Fortunately for all of us, Steve Zich's parents said yes.

With the help of a few climbing friends, wood became walls, gravel and rock became climbing holds, and plenty of glue held it all together. It wasn't polished, and it wasn't built to last forever, but it didn't have to be. It served a simple purpose: giving climbers a place to train when the weather kept them off the rock.

Before long, that little garage became something much more than a training space. It became a gathering place. Climbers from across the D.C. region came together to climb, share stories, and build lasting friendships. What started as a homemade wall grew into a thriving community.

Eventually, the one-car garage could no longer contain the enthusiasm it had inspired. As more climbers squeezed into the space, a conversation began among a small group of friends: What if there were a place built specifically for climbers?

From that conversation over 30 years ago, Sportrock was born in Rockville, Maryland, making it one of the first commercial climbing gyms in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Over the years, Sportrock continued to grow, not because of the walls, but because of the people who filled them. Every new member, every routesetter, every belayer, and every climber who walked through the doors has helped shape the community that exists today.

When Lillian Chao-Quinlan became President of Sportrock in 2005, she recognized that Sportrock's greatest strength is its members. She decided to create an event dedicated to celebrating the community that had built Sportrock from the very beginning.

Twenty events later, Beat the Heat has grown into an annual tradition welcoming more than 800 climbers, friends, and families. While the event has grown in size, the original purpose remains: to thank the people who make Sportrock what it is today.

Because from a one-car garage to a community thousands strong, one thing has never changed:

Sportrock has always been, and always will be, for climbers, by climbers.

As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Beat the Heat, we're celebrating more than an event. We're celebrating every climber who shared a belay, borrowed a rope, lent some chalk, and helped create the community we know today.

To our members, past, present, and future: Thank you for being a part of our story.
